Message From Julia Poston, Chair
Chairperson Julia Poston
Throughout my professional career, I've had the opportunity to work closely with a variety of charitable organizations in the community. This year I am pleased to partner with the American Heart Association on a program I have become passionate about - Go Red For Women.
Before taking on my role as 2011 Go Red Chair, I was like many women who did not know the extent to which heart disease is affecting women in our community. I now realize how important it is to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of women. Therefore, I encourage all women to join the Go Red movement by visiting www.GoRedForWomen.org to learn more and to take a free risk assessment.
A few positive steps can change our lives dramatically. I hope to see you all at the Go Red For Women Luncheon on May 5 at the Duke Energy Convention Center.
Message From Our Cincinnati Goes Red Sponsor
Susan Croushore, President and CEO, The Christ Hospital
As we approach the halfway point in our three-year presenting sponsorship of Cincinnati Goes Red, The Christ Hospital is proud of the many precedent-setting changes we've made in our community. Over the past year we have delivered the Go Red message to thousands through innovative programs. The most far-reaching of these is The Christ Hospital Heart Healthy Restaurant Partnership program. Because our goal is to help people prevent heart disease, we teamed up with 28 local restaurants in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky to offer heart healthy menu options, all of which have been analyzed to meet American heart Association (AHA) guidelines.
To further our mission to support healthy eating for all, we established the first ever Heart Healthy Tailgate Cook-Off Competition between high school rivals, Elder and St. Xavier. Teams from both schools were required to submit their heart healthy meal recipes to The Christ Hospital for nutritional analysis using AHA guidelines.
In October, we partnered with the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio to educate our youth about the Go Red movement. Girl Scout troops learned about the importance of living a heart-healthy lifestyle, including how the heart works, various exercises that contribute to a healthy heart and ways to incorporate a healthy diet into their lives. The girls earned a special Go Red patch, along with an activity toward a Healthy Living badge.
Although these accomplishments are significant, we still have a long way to go. Heart disease remains the number one killer of women. It is our goal to change this statistic through continued efforts to increase awareness of the disease in women and to educate them on how to reduce their risk. Take the first step today. Message From Nancy Brown
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the Cincinnati Goes Red! We’re delighted you want to learn how you can advance health, stop heart disease and save women’s lives. That’s what Go Red For Women is all about.
Heart disease isn’t just a man’s problem. It’s a woman’s problem, too. In fact, it’s women’s No. 1 killer. And, tragically, far too few women realize their risk from this often-preventable disease. We need to raise women’s awareness, to protect our mothers, daughters, sisters, friends and other loved ones. And ourselves.
You can help, starting today. Here’s how:
First, take charge of your own heart health. Visit your doctor. Know your numbers (learn more at goredforwomen.org). You can improve your blood pressure, cholesterol and other numbers by making lifestyle changes. You’ll be healthier and look and feel better, too.
Second, speak up. Help spread the word that heart disease is women’s No. 1 killer. You can make a difference. Choose to share what you learn today with your family and members of your community.
Third and last, consider making a contribution. Your donation will help fund local and national Go Red activities to support awareness, research, education and community programs to benefit women.
Please don’t leave today without committing to make a difference. Join the Go Red For Women movement — women need your help. There’s so much to do, and so much at stake. Only one in five women believes that heart disease is her greatest health threat. Reducing risk and preventing heart disease starts with education — and you.
By working together, we can help women and their families live longer, stronger lives. Thank you for your generous support.
Warm regards,
Nancy Brown
